The Stories We Wear

As young as I can remember, I loved playing dress-ups in my mum’s closet — wearing her heels, her hats, and especially her jewellery. She had these four intertwined gold bangles that made the softest clinking sound every time she moved. I’d always hear her coming up the hallway just as I was smearing her lipstick across my face (as any dedicated 8-year-old makeup artist would). Those bangles were always the dead giveaway that I was about to get busted.

That’s where it all began — my love affair with jewellery.

As I got older, I started choosing pieces with intention — pieces that held stories and somehow became part of mine. Big shiny hoops and stacked Madonna bangles in the ‘80s. Short shell chokers and long beaded strands in the ‘90s. Then came the fine jewellery phase — delicate pieces that marked big moments and quiet triumphs alike.

I’ve always remembered significant moments through jewellery. Most recently, on an unforgettable holiday through the Côte d’Azur, I picked up beautiful pieces from every place I visited — from a street peddler named Rosanna who handcrafted divine gold trinkets, to an elegant boutique in Saint-Tropez where I found something truly timeless. Each one carries a story, a mood, a memory.

Jewellery can evoke so many emotions — whether it’s sentimental, celebratory, or even slightly chaotic. Throwing back to the time my drop earrings got caught in my hair (major extensions fail — it was 2005, don’t judge 😁) while I was flipping it to impress a very handsome Italian waiter named Stefano in Rome who had to literally pull my extensions out to save my ear 😬.  Or when my best friend got stopped at airport security in Greece and had to remove — one by one — 57 thin gold bangles. The customs agent wasn’t impressed, but we were literally crying from laughter. 

That’s the thing about jewellery — it’s not just something you wear. It’s something that lives with you. It carries the energy of every place you’ve been, every laugh you’ve had, every version of yourself you’ve been becoming.
